In 1843, Charles Dickens published his now-famous novel A Christmas Carol, the story of miserly moneylender Ebenezer Scrooge, who is shown the error of his ways via supernatural forces one fateful Christmas Eve. The story has become a touchstone for the evils of greed and the power of love — and one of the most adapted literary works of all time.
In 1992, the Muppets tried their hand in adapting Dickens’ novel. In today’s discussion, the MVC team breaks down why this particular adaptation has endured and become a staple of the holiday viewing schedule, including Michael Caine’s committed dramatic performance, Miles Gordon and Paul Williams’ energetic score, and, of course, the always-hilarious Muppets.
